GoComics Site Rebrand
Company: Andrew McMeel Universal | Year: 2021
GoComics is one of the largest platforms for digital comics, but at the time of this project, the site felt dated and didn’t reflect how people — especially younger readers — were actually engaging with content online.
As a freelance product designer, I was brought in during the concepting phase to help reimagine what a modern GoComics experience could look like. My focus was on early design exploration, helping set the tone and direction for the redesign.
Summarized Case Study
The Challenge
Comics have a long tradition in print, but the digital experience hadn’t caught up. The big questions were:
How do we translate the joy of reading comics into a digital-first experience?
For classic comics (such as Garfield and Calvin and Hobbes), how do we maintain the artist’s intentions for the original artwork while also updating it for easier digestion and accessibility?
How do we make browsing and discovery feel seamless across desktop, tablet, and mobile?
How do we encourage subscriptions while keeping the reading experience fun and accessible?
Goals
Explore new design directions that could modernize the brand.
Concept responsive layouts that improved the comic reading experience.
Mock up early ideas for a subscription flow that felt inviting and easy.
My Approach
Researched competitive platforms and user feedback to spot opportunities for improvement.
Sketched and wireframed different concepts for reading, browsing, and discovering comics.
Collaborated with internal teams to pitch visual directions that balanced nostalgia with modern design trends.
The Concept
A fresh, updated visual style with cleaner layouts and typography.
Early explorations of a responsive comic reader that worked across devices.
Initial ideas for a clearer subscription journey that highlighted benefits without interrupting the reading flow.
Impact
While my role was limited to the concept phase, the explorations I created helped set the foundation for the redesign. They gave the team options to build on and a clear visual direction for how GoComics could evolve.
What I Learned
Even in the concept stage, I learned how important it is to balance tradition with innovation — keeping the nostalgic feel of comics while making the digital experience engaging and clear for new readers.
